A federal judge ruled that Anthropic's use of copyrighted books to train its Claude AI model qualifies as transformative fair use, dismissing copyright infringement claims. The Amazon-backed company avoided liability for how its AI processed literary works, with Judge William Alsup comparing the learning process to human education.

Legal exposure remains for Anthropic regarding the provenance of training materials. The court preserved claims that the AI firm initially sourced books from pirate sites before obtaining legitimate copies. A December trial will determine potential damages for unauthorized acquisition, irrespective of subsequent licensing efforts.
